This ongoing film photography series captures expansive natural landscapes across Tasmania, mainland Australia, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, and beyond. Shot on both colour and black-and-white 35mm film, the project explores light, weather, and shifting atmospheres, offering a raw and immersive view of diverse natural environments.
From the windswept coastlines and mountain ranges of Tasmania to the volcanic landscapes of Hokkaido, Kyushu (Japan), Java (Indonesia), and the Rainbow Mountains of Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park (China), the series highlights the contrasting terrains found across different regions. It also captures the dense jungles, karst mountains, and river systems of Southeast Asia, emphasising the dynamic interaction between nature and time.
These landscapes inform Martin’s mural practice, particularly Landscape Transferral, where real locations are reinterpreted in large-scale aerosol murals. By abstracting these landscapes, the murals create a dialogue between place, memory, and artistic expression, inviting viewers to experience the essence of these environments in a new way.
This series continues to evolve, incorporating new locations and experimental film techniques, reinforcing Martin’s dedication to analogue photography as a method of storytelling and visual exploration.
