Harmony and Contrast of Japan

An exploration of Japan’s urban and natural landscapes through film.

Exhibited at Chippendale Art Space, Sydney (2015) as part of the Kodo group exhibition (which Martin was head coordinator of), Harmony and Contrast of Japan is a 35mm film photobook that captures the diverse landscapes of Japan, from the concrete city-scapes of Osaka to the ancient pilgrimage trails of the Kumano Kodo. The project explores the contrasts between Japan’s urban density and its vast natural landscapes, highlighting cultural intersections, architectural contrasts, and the balance between nature and urbanised modern life.

This photobook was a one-off handcrafted edition, inkjet-printed on archival cotton rag paper and encased in Japanese cedar, reinforcing the themes of preservation, craftsmanship, and cultural duality.
