Cities at Night

A 15-year exploration of urban landscapes after dark.

Cities at Night is a long-term black and white 35mm film photography series, capturing the atmosphere of urban spaces after dark across Asia, Europe, and Australia, including Kyoto, Tokyo, Chongqing, Paris, Berlin, and Zurich. This project documents the shifting energy of city environments, exploring human behaviour, empty streets, neon-lit alleys, and ambient light.

The series runs parallel to Martin’s broader urban landscape photography practice, but focuses specifically on the nocturnal cityscape. By stripping away colour, the project highlights the contrasts between light and shadow, textures, and isolated moments. Inspired by street photography and cinematic night scenes, Cities at Night offers a meditative perspective on city life after dark.

Plans for its exhibition and publication are currently in development, with a proposed series of large-format fine art prints and a limited-edition photobook.
