Wallspace: Rosetta

Mural Project | Rosetta Primary School | Hobart, Tasmania

Landscape Transfer: Rosetta Primary School is the latest mural in my ongoing Landscape Transferral series. This body of work reinterprets real-world environments into abstracted, atmospheric compositions through the medium of spray paint. Commissioned through the Wallspace program by Arts Tasmania, the project transforms a large interior wall at Rosetta Primary School into a vibrant, immersive landscape that celebrates place, identity and creativity.

The mural draws from the surrounding landscapes of Rosetta and the Derwent Valley, developed through a series of photographic explorations undertaken on 35mm film. Three concept designs were initially created based on images captured at GASP (Wilkinson’s Point), Otago Bay, and Goat Hills, each offering a unique visual relationship to the school’s location. The Goat Hills design was ultimately selected by the school’s mural committee and forms the basis for the final mural.

The process included field photography, sketching directly onto printed photographs, and digitally developing panoramic compositions that highlight spatial layering, form and colour. The final design adopts a flowing, organic style that reflects the terrain and complements the natural textures of spray paint. This marks a stylistic shift from earlier, more angular works in the series.

The colour palette merges Rosetta Primary’s school colours with tones extracted from the surrounding environment. These were adjusted to enhance vibrancy, depth and contrast. The mural was painted freehand using MTN 94 aerosol paint and sealed with a professional-grade Nanoman anti-graffiti coating.

This project was delivered with support from Arts Tasmania, paint supplied by Vibrance Paint, and mentorship from Tom O’Hern and Jonny Scholes.
